Dental fear and anxiety is a common reason for poor oral health and avoiding the dentist for routine preventive dental care. Emphasizing the many benefits of keeping your smile healthy, Dr. Cain works with those who may suffer from dental anxiety and offers all types of conscious sedation for a pain-free and relaxing visit to our Knoxville dentist office.
Sedation dentistry can be life-changing, enabling patients to maintain, restore and enhance their smile without stress and anxiety. For patients who desire more than a local anesthetic, Dr. Cain offers conscious sedation options that will enable you to be alert and responsive, but pain-free with little or no memory after your visit. There are three options for conscious sedation and we will work with you to determine the most effective for your needs and overall health.
- Oral sedation: administered as a pill, oral conscious sedation may begin with an at home dose to calm you before your visit. This type of sedation takes time to become effective and to wear off and will require you to have an escort to and from your dental appointment.
- Nitrous oxide: also known as “laughing gas”, nitrous oxide is inhaled through a small cannula placed beneath the nose. Nitrous oxide takes effect immediately and wears off just as quickly, making it possible for you to drive yourself to and from your appointment and resume your routine shortly after your procedure in most cases.
- IV conscious sedation: our surgical partner and periodontist Dr. Robert Cain is certified in providing IV conscious sedation for patients who suffer from severe anxiety or are having multiple procedures. IV conscious sedation means that patients are relaxed, but in control of their bodily functions and responsive.
